First Responder Training for Crisis Support

Marissa Kamlowsky, MS., BCBA poses with representatives of Johnson County First Responders at GoodLife's behavioral training session.

GoodLife’s Behavioral Services Team, in partnership with the Overland Park Police Department, recently conducted essential training for 30-50 officers on crisis support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The training was made possible through funding by Sunflower Health Plan, The Centene Foundation, and KDADS. This session aimed to foster compassionate and effective interactions, respecting the dignity of those with I/DD.

The training covered best practices for early intervention, communication, and response strategies, excluding recommendations for handling dangerous crisis behaviors. Officers learned to identify individuals with IDD, determine effective communication styles, and implement the SMIP (Safety, Movement, and Imitation questions paired with physical guidance or support) approach.

We are continuing our efforts by collaborating with the CDDO to compile a resource list for officers to share with families, ensuring ongoing support and successful outcomes in future interactions. Stay tuned for more updates!
